Karnali defeated by Chitwan
In the second Nepal Premier League (NPL), Chitwan Rhinos started their campaign with a 4-wicket victory over Karnali Yaks.
Chasing a target of 167 runs, Chitwan reached the total in 19.1 overs while losing 6 wickets. They had a shaky start, scoring only 41 runs for the loss of 2 wickets in the first powerplay.
Opener David Malan was dismissed for 6 runs, bowled by Unish Singh when Chitwan had added just 22 runs. Shortly after, Dev Khanal was run out in an unfortunate manner. Deepak Bohara was on strike when Dev advanced for a run; the ball slightly touched his hand and hit the non-striker’s stumps, resulting in Dev’s dismissal for 2 runs off 2 balls.
The third wicket fell when Deepak Bohara was caught by Sompal off Yuvraj Khatri’s delivery after scoring 42 runs in 36 balls, including 6 fours and 1 six. At that point, Chitwan had 67 runs on the board.
By the end of the 10th over, Chitwan had only managed 69 runs and were under pressure. However, they added 31 runs in the next 3 overs. In the 14th over, Kushal Mall was caught by Gulshan off Dompal’s delivery after scoring 20 runs, taking Chitwan to 101.
Later, on the last ball of the 15th over, Safe JB survived a dropped catch by Nandan Yadav off Yuvraj Khatri’s bowling, which went for a six, proving costly for Karnali.
Ravi Bopra and Safe JB then guided Chitwan closer to victory. With 27 runs needed off 18 balls, Safe hit back-to-back sixes in the 18th over but was dismissed LBW off Sompal’s fourth delivery. He finished with 38 runs, including 2 fours and 4 sixes.
With 13 runs required off 12 balls, Safe’s partner played aggressively. After scoring a quick fifty, Ravi Bopra fell for 52 runs. Finally, Sohel Tanbir hit a six to seal a 4-wicket victory for Chitwan.
In bowling, Sompal took 2 wickets, while Unish, Mark, and Yuvraj each claimed one wicket.
Earlier, after winning the toss, captain Kushal Mall of Chitwan chose to bowl first. Karnali managed 166 runs for the loss of 3 wickets in their allotted 20 overs.
The two overseas players, Max O’Dowd and Priyank Panchal, gave Karnali a strong start, adding 55 runs in the first powerplay. They shared a 61-run partnership for the first wicket before Max was bowled by Safe JB for 20 runs. Chitwan took their first wicket in the 8th over and 5th ball.
Mark Walt, another overseas player, joined Priyank at the crease. Priyank went on to score a half-century off 28 balls, hitting 4 fours and 3 sixes, sharing a 63-run partnership for the second wicket. He played an impressive innings, striking 7 fours and 6 sixes in 48 balls, before being caught by Dev Khanal off Ravi Bopra’s delivery.
The fourth wicket fell when Mark Walt was dismissed by Sohel for 16 runs off 21 balls, taking Karnali to 140 runs. Pawan Saraf remained unbeaten on 27 runs from 16 balls, hitting 1 four and 3 sixes, while Nazibillah Jordan stayed not out on 4 runs.
In bowling, Sohel, Safe JB, and Ravi each took one wicket.
